November 4, 2009 Back from Hampshire Jam 8! RMI had a great time at the Hampshire Jam on Halloween in the village of Liphook and for those who have been asking how it went, here is a review plucked from the message boards with such ferocity that we forgot to name names: "....out for a bit and then back in for Radio Massacre International. If Airsculpture blew the doors off, RMI started on the roof and then moved on to the walls!! The regulars were joined by Martin Archer, playing wind synth. It was really interesting and enjoyable to watch Martin and Gary Houghton, the guitar player, playing off each other's sound. Martin had some amazing wind synth sounds going on, as well as playing a sax and something that looked like a clarinet, only larger, not sure what it was . Gary was also doing some strange things with the guitar that evoked suitable sounds. They both had a lot of energy and were obviously having a great time playing. Meanwhile Steve and Duncan were pouring the juice to the synths and adding to the sound in most enjoyable and wonderful ways. The first set went on for about 20 or so minutes and ended amidst a solid round of applause. The second set started with synth sounds in the background, as Gary Houghton and Martin Archer, using one medium sized harmonica (I think) and one jumbo big mama started creating some sound scapes that shoudn't have come out of harmonicas!! Steve was playing some cymbals set up on the floor, and Duncan was synthing away. The set opened up more or less gently, and then began building steam as they seemed to improvise their way through the second set. It lasted for maybe 30 minutes and was great! By tis time, people were really into the business of serious listening. It was fun to watch some people bouncing and swaying to the music, and others just listening intensely. The set ended with thunderous applause."
New album "Time & Motion" to be released by Cuneiform in January 2010. A new studio set is on the way, which will see a return to sequencer based improvisation, static textural pieces and with a little space rock thrown into the mix. It will be an extended big value double CD containing 4 LP length suites, recorded earlier this year. Here's a sneak preview of what to expect, taken from documentary film of one of the sessions, with tongue in cheek British humour on full display. July 23, 2009 Steve and Duncan celebrate their 30th Anniversary! 23rd July 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the first rehearsal of Age Of Berlin, the day when Duncan and Steve laid their hands on not only their first synthesizer, but Steve's virgin encounter with a drum kit, when he was handed the sticks by the one and only Mark Spybey for a knock-about during a lunchtime pastie break. Shortly after this, the dynamic duo were introduced to Gary Houghton at Mark Spybey's house.......a meeting which would have a significant effect on everybody's lives for the next thirty years. Read all about it over at Steve's blog June 16, 2009 RMI confirmed for Hampshire Jam 8! From the press release: Musiczeit, the premier electronic music download store, are proud to announce the continuation of the legend that is the Hampshire Jam Electronic Music Festival. Created and run by uber-fan Steve Jenkins this legendary event has garnered a truly unique reputation and atmosphere. Unashamedly retro in it's outlook it has provided the only regular electronic music festival in the UK for some time and gives fans of that breed of EM exactly what they want. Steve moved abroad to work in 2008 and so last years show was the last that he was able to stage. Rather than let such a fantastic event die MusicZeit stepped in and with the full backing of Steve have now taken over the reigns of running this festival. Adhering to the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" the new organisers are sticking to the tried and tested formula that has served the Hampshire Jam so well in the past. Same venue, lights & PA and with four acts picked from the cream of electronic music this years event will again be staged at The Millenium Hall, Liphook, Hampshire. The event will take place on Saturday October 31st and will feature performances by: Air Sculpture Brendan Pollard (with guests including Free System Projekt) Callisto Radio Massacre International. As with the music, you can have the ticket in your hand within minutes of clicking the buy button. The ticket is included with the artwork alongside the exclusive music. Simply print it off, and write down the order reference number on the ticket. It’s as simple as that. October 16, 2008 Back from E-Live RMI are back from a triumphant performance at E-Live in Eindhoven. Thanks to all who were present! We had a busy and enjoyable day topped off with an improvised show which judging by the reaction, was one of our best. Early signs are that this deserves to be heard again and there may well be an album out in time for Xmas. Diary to follow just as soon as Steve can get around to writing it! October 3, 2008 Warming up for E-Live We have once again been holed up in The Greenhouse making funny noises ahead of our big show in Eindhoven on 11th October. Here are some nice pictures. August 18, 2008 RMI @ E-Live! RMI will be appearing at E-Live 2008 in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday 11th October. July 5, 2008 NEARfest Journal Steve wrote a diary of his NEARfest experience. Check it out here. June 25, 2008 RMI Back from America RMI are back from the USA having been well and truly `Nearfested'. Thanks to absolutely everyone concerned for making it the most successful, professional, friendly and fun venture we've been lucky enough to be part of. Tour blog to follow.... June 11, 2008 New RMI Titles! Available at Nearfest, and from July 1st to order, the following RMI releases... Rain Falls In A Different Way: A companion piece to Rain Falls In Grey, and a collection of new music recorded during the same time frame using similar instrumentation. Expansive and atmospheric as well as strongly rhythmic space rock. Philadelphia Air Shot: A single performance for WXPN Radio in Philadelphia in 2007, using an arranged piece as a starting point, moving into sequencer improvisation before ending up in deep space over the luxury of an hour. From the DAT master. Fast Forward 1993-2008: A budget priced compilation with a difference. This aims to represent every one of 30 albums over the course of a single disc whilst being a new unique listening experience of itself. Ideal as an introduction to the band or as a `spot the album' game for seasoned followers. Also a convenient way to load a career's worth of RMI into your MP3 player at a stroke. So here we were at the Greenhouse once again, this time in the BIG room for final preparations. We can see how it got it's name, (the Greenhouse that is, not the big room, which is called that because all the other rooms in the facility are smaller) When that sun shines in through the glass roof it's like being a greenfly on a hothouse plant. Nice light for photographs though and of course the next day it was raining again as normal and we took great delight in sourcing the leak in the roof and putting a snare drum under it (somebody else's snare drum) to record some natural percussion. Oh yes, and we were also there to prepare for this rather important festival we have coming up. We had the bright idea of making things as unpleasant as possible by playing at ridiculous volume, so that everything was louder then everything else, apart from the acoustic drums which sounded like distant cardboard and coins amidst an unholy blitzkrieg of electricity pinning us all against the wall. Well it seemed like a good plan to put ourselves under difficult conditions to see how we coped with whatever eventualities the live situation might throw at us. I've stopped shaking now and am no longer gibbering any more than I usually do. The doctor says I should be able to return to normal social functioning at any time soon.....once they take the straitjacket off... RMI joins the MySpace Revolution Radio Massacre International has finally been dragged kicking and screaming onto MySpace by the sterling efforts of our new friend Travis of Los Angeles California, who took it upon himself to create a page for us without us even asking. We are pleased to officially endorse the page and look forward to working with him. Way to go Travis! May 16, 2008 New RMI Sessions: Gearing up for NEARfest "We have been spending time preparing for Nearfest in our usual workspace The Greenhouse, where we can `grow' our ideas interrupted only by the spillage from next door's room of a truly pathetic version of `Teenage Kicks', and most entertaining tales from David, Greenhouse supremo and all round good guy. We normally settle down to a day's work after some kind of deeply unhealthy but satisfying breakfast. Pictured below is Steve's Bacon, Sausage and Egg barm cake (with red sauce), hard won after approximately twenty minutes of detailed negotiations with the girl in the shop, who seemed not to know what she was doing there, or indeed that they even served coffee and made breakfasts. We can usually be seen hot footing it up a truly archaic and `wobbly in a scary kind of way' fire escape (or is that `scary in a wobbly kind of way' ?) and through the back door of our rehearsal complex, before the damn stuff we've bought gets cold. Our room is long enough to accomodate drums at one end, keys and electronics in the middle and as many guitars as you want at the other end. The PA system at the bottom sends signals out to all in the area "Do not disturb, we're rocking all the way to the USA". Aside from obviously playing as much as we can, we had an interesting diversion when a Midi Merge Box failed, causing us to lose nearly a day of preparation time as Duncan was forced to reconfigure the whole way our midi sounds are routed. Luckily I brought a good book, and finished it sooner than anticipated. Gary amused himself by dismantling one of his guitars completely to see if he could get it back together again. Still, some good work was done, and progress was made. Add to that, a couple of pints of Robinson's local bitter and some Fish and Chips for dinner and what more could you want? As we leave on the last day, we come across a young band on the fire escape, enjoying a spliff or two, and no doubt chasing their own dreams of stardom in the rapidly fading edifice of a music industry. "Nice smell" says Duncan, "They'll never get on Top Of The Pops if they carry on doing that" I say. Maybe they are the guys who've been practising `Teenage Kicks' for the last month, in which case they really need to lay off it a bit. No one needs to hear that bloody song ever again". April 11, 2008 New RMI Sessions: Pictures Available February saw Radio Massacre International engaged in recording their first film soundtrack, for City 21 created by the Knossus Project, and due for summer release. It's an organisation which looks at alternative global futures and passes on these ideas through education and film. We had a very rewarding time playing music in a different way, all specifically and newly composed for the project. We were aware that there will be speech over this music 90% of the time, and performed accordingly. We have presented the Knossus Project with 20 pieces ranging from 15 seconds to 23 minutes. These pics were all taken at the recording sessions at The Greenhouse:
March 16, 2008 New Download Album: Antisocial Antisocial was recorded live at The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds in June 2005, and is released here for the first time. The title refers to the fact that we played at some volume, and for an uninterrupted hour and a half. The piece moved through several different sections which have been indexed and titled even though the piece is continuous. Other notable features of this performance were that one of Gary's speaker cabs had to be physically assaulted to calm it down, and Duncan managed to lose a filling mid-performance. The percussion set up included a baking tray full of pennies, all of which were subsequently donated to the Social Club's collection for much needed soundproofing. Check the discography for the tracklisting or head on over to MusicZeit to download it! March 4, 2008 And The Award Goes to... Electronic Best Overall: Radio Massacre International “Rain Falls in Grey” – This is not pure electronic music, it is psychedelic space rock. However, I was so impressed with the musicianship, the passion, the boldness, and the overall sound of it that RMI totally won me over with an album that I frankly didn’t expect to like all that much.(Phil Derby). For more information, head on over to ElectroAmbientSpace.Com! February 15, 2008 Signal To Noise Our friend Darren Bergstein (see our 2007 tour diary) has finally come through with this article about us. We arrived back safely from the USA a couple of weeks back, and all agree it’s the best time we’ve had. Thanks to everyone over there who made our trip so special with their generous help and great company, and hello to everyone who came out to see us play. We’re back in June for Nearfest, and hope to see you all again. Season’s Greetings! Steve, Duncan and Gary November 22, 2007 Radio Massacre International on Echoes Via press release: Tuesday, November 30 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RADIO MASSACRE INTERNATIONAL English Space music trio plays electronic music the old-fashioned way, with their hands While most electronic musicians are wed to their laptop screens, Radio Massacre International plays their music on old analog synthesizers, keyboards and electric guitar. They've become the leading torch bearers for truly live space music, conceived in the moment, without preprogrammed sequences. We hear them create new music live in the Echoes Living Room. For more information, head on over to the Echoes website. November 20, 2007 Radio Massacre International plugs into NFX Via press release: As one of the premier electronic bands performing today, England’s Radio Massacre International has a long history of playing "in the moment" and is capable of just about anything. After 15 years and more than 25 albums, the band is continues to look over the horizon to broaden their craft. Their latest release, "Rain Falls in Grey" (Cuneiform) is "a prog album for those who get itchy at the thought of electronic music." A tribute to former Pink Floyd leader Syd Barrett, the album shows them adapting to a rock band format using the spirit of Syd to channel one of the best albums in their catalog. Having first performed in the USA at ProgWest in 2002, the buzz resulted in three performances at The Gatherings Concert Series in Philadelphia. Their rendition of "Rain Falls in Grey," performed in November 2007 while at Orion Studios, left the audience stunned; unaware that such power could exist within electronic music. RMI uses an arsenal of analog equipment, ranging from Moogs to Mellotrons to sequencers to Fender Rhodes, to create their sonic blanket of sound. RMI promises to present a very special show to the NEARfest audience and we are very excited to feature them at NFX. For more information, head on over to the NEARfest website. |
